Sondra Lynn King
1941 - 2005
We wouldn't be "who we are" without one
particular individual; a founding member, invaluable second alto, phenomenal
friend and all around incredible woman - Sondra King. On April 10, 2005, Bread
& Roses dedicated its 10th Anniversary Concert to Sondra in her memory.
Sondra passed away on March 21, 2005. She was looking forward to
singing in the upcoming anniversary concert and was so
excited that we were performing one of her favorite songs in our
repertoire, Ashikatali. As
well as missing having Sondra sing with us, we missed the
opportunity to sing
for her. In February (just one month before she passed) she
announced her engagement at rehearsal, and asked the group to sing for her wedding
in August of that same year. Sondra
was a woman dedicated to so many righteous causes such as improving
children's nutrition worldwide, ending domestic violence, fighting
world hunger, and encouraging tolerance and acceptance among all
people. She was also an outstanding professor of
nutrition and mentor at Northern Illinois University - a career from
which she had retired a mere 3 years earlier. Perhaps most importantly to those who knew
her best, Sondra was the best sister, mother, fiancé and friend anyone
could have asked for. Sondra, will be missed, but never
forgotten. Her voice will echo in our hearts; forever laughing,
counseling, teaching, praying and singing.
